CE Information Title:  Obesity Compendium Release date:  June, 2009 Expiration date:  June, 2012 Estimated time to complete activity:  26.5 hours Target Audience : This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of general surgeons, bariatric surgeons, RNs, and other integrated health professionals. This course will provide CME for Bariatric Physicians in their specific specialty to comply with Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part II – Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment. Learning Objectives : Upon completion of this web-based continuing medical education course, participants should be able to: 1. Describe the disease of morbid obesity and its comorbid conditions; 2. Determine medical weight loss options and the role of the non-surgeon clinician; 3. Summarize the history of weight loss surgery; 4. Recognize the various surgical procedures common today; 5. Select appropriate bariatric surgical candidates and recognize contraindications for surgery; 6. Specify issues in the perioperative care and early postoperative care and early postoperative management; 7. Explain common perioperative complications and long-term nutritional consequences; and 8. Specify the role and goals of bariatric Centers of Excellence; 9. Discuss nutritional ramifications of surgery including preoperative screening, postoperative surveillance, and supplementations; 10. Describe the concept of metabolic surgery and the new technologies under development for metabolic and bariatric surgery; 11. Summarize the issues necessary to run a successful bariatric program and obtain COE status; and 12. Explain the legal ramification of surgery and how to minimize legal risk.
